Forza Motorsport Week in Review 6-6-14

Brian Ekberg
Friday, June 6, 2014

Wow. This week has done me in and it’s not even E3 yet! With the most exciting video game week of the year just days away, we have been busy here at Turn 10 cranking away to get prepared for the show. That includes prepping this very Web site for all of the E3 awesomeness that will be coming your way beginning on Monday, June 9. But, before we get there, let’s talk about THIS week, which was a doozy.

On Monday, and each day this week, IGN has been unveiling the next great Forza game: Forza Horizon 2! Due for release this fall, Forza Horizon 2 is once again being developed by our good friends at Playground Games, and is coming exclusively to both Xbox One and Xbox 360 (Sumo Digital is leading development of the 360 version). Those of you who have been following this closely probably know all of this by now – either because you’ve been following the coverage daily on IGN itself, or you’ve been keeping up with our recaps here on the site. For those of you who missed both and want to get caught up quickly, here’s the past week’s worth of Forza Horizon 2 over at IGN:

  • Forza Horizon 2 Announced – Monday’s opening story featured the first mention of Horizon 2, as well as the awesome visual ID for the game featuring our cover car – the Lamborghini Huracán.
  • A Sunday Drive with Forza Horizon 2 – The first big hands-on preview of the game and wow, was it epic. If you want to know everything there is to know about Horizon 2 – until next week that is – give this story a read immediately.
  • Resolution, Framerate, Music & More – Wednesday’s feature was an extensive interview with Playground Games’ creative director Ralph Fulton, detailing some of the technical aspects of Forza Horizon 2, including the game’s native 1080p resolution and locked 30 fps; as well as discussions on the inspiration for the game, and more.
  • A Conversation with Alan Hartman and Dan Greenawalt – The name says it all. It’s been nearly ten years since the original Forza Motorsport was released and, on Thursday, IGN’s Luke Reilly spoke with two of the key people behind Forza, talking about the past, present, and future of the Forza franchise.

Which leads us to today. You’ve waited all week to see Forza Horizon 2 in action and, earlier today, IGN had the first trailer for the game – a teaser, in fact, of the full Horizon 2 E3 trailer that will launch on Monday during the Xbox Media Briefing. Here it is:

The briefest of glimpses of the Huracán, a shot of an open field and mountains in the distance, and that awesome clap of thunder at the end – it’s the textbook definition of “tease”! Having seen the full E3 trailer for myself, I can tell you it delivers in spades, so stay tuned to the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on Monday, June 9 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Pacific (go to www.xbox.com to watch it live!) and gird your eyeballs accordingly.

Forza Motorsport 5 GOTY Edition

In addition to all of this Forza Horizon 2 news, earlier today, IGN dropped the news of the Forza Motorsport 5 Racing Game of the Year Edition, which will be available in retail stores beginning on July 22. The game will feature all of the awesome content found in Forza 5 at launch, as well as additional content like the Top Gear Car Pack and 17 (yep, that number is correct) total tracks.

Le Mans Charity Race

Folks, the biggest endurance race of the year is happening next weekend – the 24 Hours of Le Mans! We’ll have boots on the ground at the big race – our Man in the UK Ian (aka Helios) will be there – and we’ll have some cool stuff coming to you in Forza Motorsport 5 as well, including a chance to earn a new Badge & Title by completing our 2.4 Hours D’Endurance Challenge (complete a race in the 2.4 Hours D’Endurance Hopper, and drive 250 miles in the event), which will go live on Friday, June 13 to coincide with the start of Le Mans weekend.

We’re not the only ones with Le Mans plans in Forza 5, however. UK resident and massive Forza fan Chris Larsen is organizing a real 24-hour endurance race on Circuit de la Sarthe among eight teams of three drivers – all in Forza 5. Best of all, this is for charity – Chris hopes to raise money for Kidney Research UK in tribute to a friend’s battle with kidney-related disease. It’s obviously a great cause and we wish Chris all the best in reaching his goal (and, hopefully, far beyond). If you want to pledge your support to Chris, visit the site he set up or (for you UK folks) check out the DB Gaming store in Warrington on Crown Street to support the teams in person. Good luck guys!

Tanner Foust @ the X-Games

A few weeks ago we announced our partnership with driver, host, and all around stand-up dude Tanner Foust and this weekend you’ll be able to watch Tanner do his thing in his Forza 5-sponsored VW Golf in the X-Games competition coming from the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas. Tune In Saturday to ESPN from 9 – 11 a.m. Pacific to watch Rallycross with Forza Motorsport and Xbox One along for the ride on Tanner’s rally spec car. In the meantime, whet your rally appetite for the race by checking this short film highlighting Tanner’s previous race in Europe. The production is awesome and the rallycross action is amazing to watch.

Top 10 Forza Liveries on Upload

Earlier this week, our friends at Xbox Upload posted a great video feature, counting down 10 of their favorite Forza Motorsport 5 custom liveries. Check out the feature, which spotlights some awesome design work from the likes of DomesticMango, TrailMonster, TheFishE77, and more:

With just a few days to go before E3, the team here is currently scrambling to put the finishing touches on updates we’ll be making to FM.net for Day 1 of E3. If you haven’t already visited it, earlier this week we posted our Forza Horizon 2 discussion forum section, which you can head to now and get your daily dose of Horizon 2 speculation/conversation/interaction. All of the FM.net magic will be unveiled on Monday after the Xbox Media Briefing, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Pacific. Be sure to check FM.net directly after the show has completed for all the Forza updates.

Now, speaking of the Xbox Briefing, if you’re in Los Angeles, you have an opportunity to maybe (MAYBE!) get a ticket to the show. Xbox’s Major Nelson is hosting an event at the Microsoft Retail Store in Century City on Sunday, June 8 from 1-3 p.m. The raffle for Media Briefing tickets begins at 11 a.m., with drawings every 15 minutes until 12:45 p.m. For more details see Major’s post on his blog and good luck!

So, that wraps it up another WIR. With E3 looming, there’s no better time to be following us on social media to get the latest Forza updates – so hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and I’ll see you next Friday with a post-E3 review edition of the WIR.

Bring on the show!
