Forza Motorsport Week in Review 1-29-16
I feel like I should open this week’s edition of the Week in Review with a simple word: Surprise! This week we released the next car pack for Forza Motorsport 6 a week ahead of our typical schedule. The reason is simple – the Alpinestars Car Pack is full of great cars, but its focus is on two very special race cars, each of which competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona race, the next iteration of which kicks off this very weekend.
What better way celebrate the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona race than by taking some laps in last year’s overall winner, the 2015 Ford #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley Mk XXVI Daytona Prototype? Or, if you want to go back in time a bit, you can get behind the wheel of another Daytona winner in the 1990 Mercury #15 Whistler Radar Cougar XR-7. [NOTE: We are aware of an issue with the 2015 Ford #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley Mk XXVI Daytona Prototype that causes it to underperform compared to its real-life capabilities. While we don’t yet have a fix for this issue, we will keep the community informed on the status of the car going forward.]
But if race cars aren’t necessarily you’re thing, the pack has more to offer – like two 90s gems in the 1996 Subaru SVX and the 1992 Alfa Romeo Milano Quadrifoglio Verde, the 1974 Toyota Corolla SR5, and, perhaps the most talked about Forza 6 DLC car since the Cadillac Limo, the 2005 Pontiac Aztek. As Walter White’s everyday driver in “Breaking Bad,” the Aztek has achieved iconic status in Hollywood and beyond. It also has a pretty great starring role in this month’s DLC trailer:
The Alpinestars Car Pack is available now and is free for Car Pass owners. Now, we’ve got a busy one this week, full of cool stuff around the Daytona 24 Hour Race, so let’s press on with the Week in Review!
Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona
When you’re not driving Daytona 24 Hour competitors in Forza 6, you can spend the rest of your time watching the race live as it happens. The 54th Role 24 at Daytona opens the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season as well as the international racing calendar. This is also the opening race for Daytona International Speedway’s reimagined motorsports stadium, which you can see and drive in Forza 6, and is the result of a massive $400 million renovation.
You’ll be able to watch the race live on FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, and IMSA.tv – from the pre-race grid all the way to the waiving of the checkered flag. Here’s some additional detail of the race happenings for each day of the race weekend:
Friday, Jan. 29 (All Times ET)
The Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge opens 2016 competition with the BMW Performance 200, streamed live on IMSA.com and the IMSA mobile app beginning with the green flag at 1:45 p.m. for two hours, 30 minutes of door handle-to-door handle racing.
Saturday, Jan. 30
Follow all the action live as the 54th Rolex 24 At Daytona kicks off the 2016 WeatherTech Championship season. FS1 begins coverage from 2-4 p.m., including the green flag at 2:40 p.m. FS2 then takes over from 4-10 p.m. which includes coverage on the FOX Sports Go app.
Overnight, Jan. 30-31
IMSA.com and the IMSA mobile app will live stream both video and commentary from 10 p.m.-7 a.m. This year’s coverage includes additional at-track and in-car cameras throughout the overnight hours.
Sunday, Jan. 31
FS1 picks up the action at 7 a.m. FS2 picks up the action at 10:30 a.m., when FS1 returns with complete coverage through the checkered flag at 2:40 p.m. and the Victory Lane celebration through 3 p.m.
If you want to watch the race but aren’t sure which teams are which, or where your favorite drivers are on the grid, make sure you check out this handy 2016 Roles 24 at Daytona Spotters Guide, created by designer Andy Blackmore and featuring a detailed (and gorgeous) breakdown of all the cars, teams, and drivers on the grid. Its a must-have on race day!
With the release of the Alpinestars Car Pack, we’re launching a new contest in Rivals with our partners at Alpinestars. Set a time in the new “Daytona Battle” Rivals event using the 2015 Ford #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley Mk XXVI Daytona Prototype (stock only) for your chance to win. The top 10 finishers will win awesome Alpinestars gear – see the rules for the rundown of all the terms and conditions and good luck!
HMA’s Q&A With Calvin Fish
So, you can drive some new Daytona cars, on the newly renovated Daytona track in Forza 6. You can compete in a brand new Rivals event for fabulous prizes. You can watch the REAL Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona live as it happens this weekend. What’s left? Well, how about taking a trip into Daytona history by checking out this week’s edition of Heavy Metal Affliction? In this story, johniwanna interviewed Calvin Fish, one of the broadcasters for this weekend’s race, and a former driver himself. In fact Fish was a driver of the 1990 Mercury #15 Whistler that’s also in this month’s pack and he has fond memories of the car. Check out the interview and look for Part 2, where Fish talks about his days racing against the likes of Ayrton Senna, next week.

As I have for the past few weeks, I’ll be running a racing series with viewers so if you want to compete, make sure you watch the show live and send me a friend request on Xbox Live (GT: Mechberg).
In addition to the racing, we’ll be showing off the January VIP car, a screenshot of which I just happen to have here!
