Forza Motorsport Week in Review 11-13-15

Brian Ekberg
Friday, November 13, 2015

Normally this time of year, we would lead the Forza Motorsport Week in Review with news on Forza Motorsport 6. After all, that is the newest Forza game and the game that has had awesome stuff going on ever since launch. This week, however, we’re turning back the clock ever so slightly to Forza Horizon 2 to celebrate the launch of a brand new car pack in everyone’s favorite open world racing game.

The Fast & Furious Car Pack for Forza Horizon 2 on Xbox One launched earlier in the week, featuring ten cars from the Fast & Furious film series. From pure Mopar muscle like the 1968 Dodge Charger to zippy JDMs like the 1995 Toyota Supra RZ and the 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), this pack has got a ton of a variety, and all of them have earned their legendary status within the “Fast & Furious” film franchise. Personally speaking, I vividly remember the first time I saw the 2002 Nissan Fairlady Z in “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” (which I’ll go to my grave believing is the finest and most important movie in the entire series). That unmistakable scarab livery on the side of the car looked to me like something directly out of Forza and made it one of my favorite movie cars of all time.

You can get the 2002 Fairlady Z and the rest of the Fast & Furious Car Pack for Forza Horizon 2 on the Xbox Store. And now, let’s move on with another jam-packed edition of the Week in Review!

New Rivals and Leagues

We’ve got some new Rivals events arriving in Forza Motorsport 6 this week:

Relive the Glory – Take the 1988 McLaren MP4/4 around Hockenheim and discover what makes this one of the most successful grand prix cars of all time.

Battle at Bathurst – Legends like the Holden Torana are made at Bathurst. Bring your best B-class car to Mount Panorama and prepare for battle.

Trofeo Monza (VIP only) – Spec racing at its finest! Can you tame the 2014 Maserati #35 M.Calamia Swiss Team MC Trofeo and dominate the leaderboard?

In addition, after putting it to a vote on Twitter, next week’s Ghost League will feature Class R cars, the first time this class has been featured in League play since Forza 6’s launch. Look for the new League to go into effect on Sunday!

As if that’s not enough, and in celebration of the release of the Fast & Furious Car Pack for Forza Horizon 2, we’ve got new Horizon Rivals going up today as well:

Mopar Mountain Hop -- While you won’t have to worry about armed mercenaries chasing you, this bumpy mountain ride is no walk in the park, even with your off road-ready 1968 Dodge Charger. This event requires the Forza Horizon 2 Fast & Furious Car Pack.

Rising Sun Fun Run -- Bring your hottest S1 class, 1993-2003 Japanese cars to this early morning race through the slightly slick streets of Nice Messina.

Go Big or Go Home -- Horizon's heaviest roll out in this event through the Sisteron Abbey Ruins featuring D class vehicles weighing over 5000 lbs.

Small Wonders -- This wild Island Run Rampage features classic lightweight cars to tackle Storm Island's rough terrain. The Storm Island Expansion is required to participate in this event.

Ring Around Nice -- Bring your "A" game and your best A class car to this event on one of Nice Messina's fastest routes.

We Sail at Dusk -- Horizon's fastest cars take on this fast route around Nice Messina's picturesque harbor. This event is open to Forza Horizon 2 VIPs only.

Datsun 2000 Love

Our own johniwanna has been out enjoying some sun on vacation. Before he left, however, he pulled together some thoughts on a car he’s been enjoying from the eBay Motors Car Pack for Forza Motorsport 6, the 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster. Here’s what John had to say:

“Proving that fun is not necessarily contingent on huge horsepower numbers, the 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster is a delight to race in Forza Motorsport 6. At just over a ton in weight and with near-perfect 50/50 weight balance, the little Roadster from Japan is a blast in the turns. Just point the nose and pin the throttle and away you go. With gears so long you probably won’t even see fifth unless you are on the Mulsanne Straight, the 2000 is apt to stay wound up through an apex and then hit just before the next curve.

“The sound from the four-cylinder, especially in chase view, is a zippy rasp and is reminiscent of the cars from Europe it matches up so well with. Consider the Ford Lotus Cortina or the Alfa Romeo Spider strong fodder for great racing. These cars all tune up very well, with a little bump in power and a slight stiffening of the suspension. At the top of E class you will often think you are going faster than you are. Further consider the 2000 Roadster to be a momentum racer that can stick to any corner and hold any racing line with the right driver behind the wheel.

“Then there are the classic looks that will have any vintage sports car lover drooling in ForzaVista mode. Clean lines and distinctive details make the 2000 a Forzatographer’s dream. The taillights alone are worthy of multiple angles. The expressive face of the convertible begs for the eye’s or lens’ attention as well with the bulging air intake adding a touch of virility to the nose.

“Whether you are zipping around Lime Rock in a rendition of a vintage car race or cutting down the corkscrew at Laguna Seca simulating Monterrey Classic Car week, the 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster is ready to strut its considerable stuff.”

In addition to John’s writeup, our friends over at the eBay Motors blog have composed their own paean to the Datsun 2000, offering some interesting insight into the beginnings of the Nissan-built roadster and through the model’s eight-year run (and showing off a cherry 1970 version of the car that’s for sale right now on eBay). The article is well worth a read for JDM fans!

Forza Motorsport 6 Tokens

On Saturday, we’ll be activating tokens in Forza Motorsport 6, allowing players to purchase tokens which can be used for in-game items like cars and Mod packs. Players who do not wish to see the token feature in Forza Motorsport 6 menus will have the option to disable this feature from appearing by turning Tokens off in the HUD Options menu.

APEX Film Premiere

Forza Motorsport is honored to host the upcoming world-wide premiere of “APEX: The Story of the Hypercar during the week of the Los Angeles International Auto Show in Los Angeles and we have a small number of tickets available for Forza fans! Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and we will be in touch via our forum PM system if you have been selected. The film explores the high-stakes, boundary-exceeding world of the fastest and most technologically advanced production cars on the planet. Musial (APEX Director), Christian Schnedler (APEX Producer), Christian von Koenigsegg (founder of Koenigsegg Cars), Mike Spinelli (/DRIVE), and Forza’s own Dan Greenawalt.

General theatrical release of APEX is planned in early December. Look for more in the future!

Penske’s Podium

Congratulations to Scott Pye and DJR Team Penske, who managed a third-place finish in last weekend’s ITM 500 in New Zealand. This is the first podium finish for the Xbox-sponsored DJR Team Penske team in V8 Supercars. Here’s to many more in the future!

TORA Formula E Championship

December will see the launch of the TORA Formula E Championship, powered by Forza Motorsport 6. Here’s more from the folks at TORA:

“Following the real-world Formula E championship, the virtual counterpart will visit a number of circuits within Forza Motorsport 6 that give the same urban feel and technical challenge. Drivers will also be able to compete using the same Renault Spark SRT_01E car in Forza and, with 24 car grids available across multiple lobbies, the racing is certain to impress through 2016. The eight-race calendar will take Forza racers around the world to some of the most spectacular circuits in the game. Visiting Rio, Abu Dhabi and Long Beach among others, drivers are certain to relish the unique challenge of Formula E. In addition, the FIA Formula E Championship will be supporting TORA's championship with prizes for the overall winners (including tickets to the London ePrix).

“We are very proud to welcome this prestigious new series to TORA. ‘It's fantastic to have Formula E at TORA for the first time as a full blown championship,’ Matt Hunter says. ‘The new technologies involved in the cars and the way drivers need to adapt their styles will add a new level of challenge to the series and the circuits are sure to bring out the best of the SRT_01E. Having the support of both Turn 10 and the FIA Formula E Championship for this is fantastic and a true reflection of the hard work and dedication put into TORA by the team behind the scenes, especially after eight years!’

Forza 6 Survey

Earlier this week we launched our first Forza Motorsport 6 Customer Survey and we would most certainly appreciate it if everyone who reads this would take a few minutes to complete it. There are only a handful of questions in this brief survey and we definitely value the feedback that will come from it! The survey will be live until next Sunday; thanks for taking the time to be part of it!

That about wraps it up for another Week in Review. I’ll be handing off #ForzaFriday show duties to our own AyoJube, who did a bang-up job painting another Fallout-themed car (this time the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona) and will spend a couple hours on Friday creating another masterpiece worthy of framing… or just driving fast. After his Tuesday stream, and considering the recent Bob Ross mania on Twitch, the pressure has been on Jube to get a Bob Ross-style landscape on a car. Will he rise to the Bob Ross challenge on Friday? Tune in on our official Twitch channel beginning at 3 p.m. Pacific to find out!
