Rear View Mirror 1-25-16
Happy Monday Forza fans! The countdown to racing is nearly up. This coming weekend we have the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona coming up and the World Rally Championship got underway this past weekend. It won’t be long and everything with four-wheels will be out there making beautiful noise and keeping the tire manufacturers in business.
So take a look at what happened in the world of racing, both virtual and real-life, in this week’s edition of Rear View Mirror.
FIA Formula E Race Off
Fans and racers alike had a good time competing in the Formula E Race Off event that pitted Formula E drivers Bruno Senna and Nico Prost against each other and Forza fans at Gfinity Arena in London. In the end, it was Bruno Senna who took to his virtual racing career quicker than Prost. Overall, drivers from the Forza community such as PJ Tierney and eventual winner Zak Scholes proved to be much faster than the real life drivers Senna and Prost.
There is more extensive coverage of the event to be seen on the Formula E website and you can check out this video of the final race. Those look like five tough laps with drivers pulling out all the stops to vie for the win. Congratulations to all who had a chance to participate.
WRC Monte Carlo
The 2016 WRC season started off just the way Sébastien Ogier wanted it to, with a hat trick of wins at Monte Carlo. Ogier joins an elite club of drivers (Sandro Munari, Walter Röhrl, Tommi Mäkinen, and Sébastien Loeb) who have won the Rally Monte Carlo three times consecutively. This round is of particular import to Ogier, who was born at the rally base of Gap, making this his home rally.
Ogier led the Volkswagens to victory by 1 minute, 54 seconds but was in close competition with Kris Meeke in his Citroën until Meeke retired from damage to his gearbox inflicted by a rock. VW teammate Andreas Mikkelsen was ready to fall in to second place. Thierry Neuville, in the new Hyundai i20, had to settle for third place when gearbox problems slowed their otherwise superior pace toward second.
The pageantry of Monte Carlo, the mountains above Monaco, and the snow-covered roads of the French Alps set an awe-inspiring stage for this first rally of the 2016 season. Next up is Sweden, the one true winter rally event.
Trophée Andros Lans En Vercors
The ice and snow covered tracks of the Trophée Andros may not be all the spectacle of the Red Bull Frozen Rush but it is one of the longest-running winter race series in the world. Fans travel to see the French celebrities who show up to give their best shot at sliding in the snow along with the best frozen-condition drivers of the world.
This week Franck Lagorce in in his Dacia Lodgy took the lead in the points with wins in both races. Lagorce is a former Formula 1 driver and is making his presence known this year in Trophée Andros amidst a deep field of drivers from many disciplines trying to take down four-time champion Jean-Philippe Dayraut. The field at Lans En Vercors was broadened by the entry of a Ford Fiesta driven by former 24 Hour of Le Mans winner Jonathan Hirschi.
Check out this fan-produced video for a look at the cars and motorcycles racing in the icy conditions.
